Don Hershberger

Don “Duck”
Hershberger, the bass of
Accent, lives in Wooster with his wife Janet. They have 3 children and 3 grandchildren.
He is retired from the Wooster Brush Company where he was the
Production Control Manager. Don
now enjoys golfing and the family swimming pool when not singing.
Don was first
introduced to barbershopping at a party that his wife, then a Sweet
Adeline, was invited to. There
he was encouraged to sing with 3 other guys at the party, and
“poof”, his barbershopping experiences began.
He joined the Wayneaires Chorus and now 24 years later is still
enjoying the hobby and having more fun than ever.
His first quartet was the Noise Refinery that was formed within
the Wayneaires Chapter. After
that there were a number of other quartets but one that lasted about
10 years was the Harmony Supply Line.
This quartet got together at an annual function at Middle Bass
Island where a baritone and lead was looking for a tenor and bass.
They met at a cook shack during Middle Bass Weekend and agreed
to buy “socks”. It
was a good long run with some real fine singers and friends.
When this run was over he heard 3 guys, Mike, Bill and Wayne
were looking for a bass to form a quartet.
They agreed to let him audition and “Walla” he was accepted
and Accent Quartet was formed. Accent
is a very active quartet singing both in the community and contest
environments. One of the
highlights of being together was doing the Music Man (twice) at our
local high school. What
an experience!
As
someone once said, “After silence, that which comes nearest to
expressing the inexpressible is Music”.

Bill Evans

Singing the high
part is Bill Evans. Bill
was brought up on barbershop harmony when his Father, O. B. and his
Uncle Bob sang in a Barbershop Quartet, The Akro-Lads.
He didn’t join the society until 1976 and had been a member
of the Wayneaires Chorus and now is a member of the Akron Derbytown
Chorus. Bill’s first
quartet experience was singing with his Father singing Bass, Brother
David, Baritone, a real great friend Eddie Hughes singing Tenor and
Bill singing Lead. He has also sang in two other quartets, singing bass in one
and baritone in the other.
Bill’s
accomplishments include singing in The Music Man twice with Accent and
once with his first Quartet, The Beginning Sound.
He also was a River City Kid way back in the early 1970’s.
Okay, so now you have a rough idea how old this guy really is,
although he won’t admit it.
He has held many
jobs in the Wayneaires Chorus. He
was music vice-president, show chairman, membership vice-president,
section leader for bass, baritone and tenor sections, assistant
director and director of the chorus.
This chorus is now defunct, but holds a lot of great memories
for him.
Bill
works at Frito-Lay in the Shipping Department.
You really can’t tell if he is shipping out more than he
eats. He has been a
resident of Wooster, Ohio, for the past 23 years and thanks his
biggest fans, Lucy, his wife, and their six wonderful children.
Bill’s youngest son Justin will
probably follow in his footsteps becoming a third generation
barbershopper.

Singing baritone is Wayne
Gilkey. Wayne has been an active barbershop since 1978, where he began his career with the former "Wayneaires
Chorus" of Wooster. He is proud to have been introduced to
barbershop by his father, the late Harry "Bud" Gilkey as a
child.
"Accent" is the longest running quartet he has ever
been involved with, having started with Mike and Bill not long after
graduation from Bethany College in 1987. Before that Wayne was a
substitute baritone for "the Noise Refinery" quartet of
Wooster.
Wayne has been active in music since around sixth grade, singing in
choirs through high school and college, and has sung music
ranging from jazz to Verde's Requiem. Wayne loves rock and roll,
old hymns, and hopes to share his
love of his hobby with others through "Accent."
